Research Guide

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the M2M Premier Analyst Firm Guide. This section features profiles of every research analyst firm covering machine-to-machine technology, breaks down what services they offer, and breaks down what reports and briefs they’ve published. To begin, please select the name of one of the analyst firms below.

Aberdeen Group
www.aberdeen.com
Aberdeen is a research-centric analyst firm with a manufacturing background that began covering M2M in 2004. Within M2M, the firm’s focus is strictly on RPS (remote-product service) for manufacturers, and for a time, it held the lead in that space over chief competitor Harbor Research. While Aberdeen’s focus on M2M has waned since the 2007 departure of its three lead analysts, it still issues weekly Service Chain Advisor email newsletters, conducts frequent benchmark surveys, and hosts an annual Chief Service Officer Summit (www.chiefserviceofficer.com).
ABI Research
www.abiresearch.com
ABI Research has climbed to the upper echelon of firms covering M2M, thanks largely to the recent emergence of senior analyst Sam Lucero as one of the best in the business. ABI’s M2M Research Service covers cellular markets, sensor networking, home automation, building control, smart metering, and telematics. Its research reports are issued approximately every 2-3 months with intermittent briefs and insights published as well. Along with Gartner’s figures, ABI’s annual cellular-module marketshare data is the most widely accepted in the industry.
AMR Research
www.amrresearch.com
Founded in 1986, AMR Research provides subscription advisory services and peer networking opportunities to operations and IT executives in the consumer products, life sciences, manufacturing, and retail sectors. The company’s M2M coverage is mainly focused on RFID (radio frequency identification) and other supply-chain and service-based applications.
ARC Advisory Group
www.arcweb.com
ARC is an research and consulting firm for the manufacturing industry, focused mainly on supply-chain and plant-floor technology. Its coverage of M2M is informal and somewhat infrequent, yet still ranks among the industry’s most insightful. ARC’s research focus overlaps with machine-to-machine technology in two key areas: industrial remote monitoring (specifically SCADA) and sensor networking. While the firm doesn’t have a research track dedicated to the space, senior analyst Harry Forbes’ coverage of sensor networking is among the best available.
Beecham Research
www.beechamresearch.com/
Beecham Research focuses on the growing M2M (machine-to-machine) market. M2M is also referred to by the terms: embedded networking, embedded connectivity, remote device monitoring, remote device management, Pervasive Internet. Beecham Research tracks a wide range of applications across 9 key sectors. Beecham Research also monitors the use of all major communication technologies for use in M2M, including fixed technologies like Ethernet, power line communications (PLC), broadband (DSL), cable, and wireless technologies like cellular (GSM, SMS, GPRS, CDMA, HSDPA, EVDO), WLAN (WiFi), WiMAX, Bluetooth, ZigBee and RFID.
Berg Insight
www.berginsight.com
The two-man team of Johan Fagerberg and Tobias Ryberg have turned Berg Insight into one of the leading M2M analyst firms in Europe. Berg has around two-dozen reports in its library, almost half of which are on M2M and M2M-related subjects. While it’s best known for its coverage of the European market, Berg has also covered North America and often takes a global focus in its vertical application reports. In June 2006, Berg Insight launched an online media site, LBS Insight (www.lbsinsight.com) for location-based services technology.
Forrester Research
www.forrester.com
After a long hiatus, Forrester Research appears to be back again covering M2M—or as the firm calls it, the “X (Extended) Internet”. Forrester first introduced that term in 2000 and organized X Internet Strategy Forums in 2001 and 2003 for senior-level executives. In 2004, the firm aggressively promoted its research in the space, released a slew of reports and briefs, and even launched a dedicated website. In the three years since, the website has come down, the reports have slowed, and its analysts have moved on to other subjects. Today, Forrester’s lead analyst covering M2M is Roy Wildeman, whose last report on the subject was released in July 2007.
Gartner
www.gartner.com
Gartner’s on-again, off-again coverage of M2M appears to be on again in a big way, with machine-to-machine technology referenced or covered in more than a dozen reports in 2007. Gartner, which is the world’s largest IT research firm, has two leads in M2M: Dan Miklovic, research vice president, and the penta-lingual Leif-Olof Wallin, who authored Gartner’s in-depth study of the M2M cellular module market in 2007. The firm doesn’t have a dedicated research track, but a search for M2M on its website turns up all of its coverage of the space for the last two-plus years.
