Safety First with M2M

M2M technology is being used in a number of industries to promote a safer working environment.
One of the key issues in any workplace is safety. Ensuring employees are not working under hazardous conditions can be difficult to monitor in facilities such as a steel manufacturing plant or large construction site. The same goes for employees working by themselves in remote locations. Ensuring safety in the workplace can prove to be a difficult task but M2M (machine-to-machine) technology can help.

POSCO (Pohang Iron and Steel Company). www.posco.co.kr, Pohang, South Korea, recently implemented a workplace safety solution from IBM Corp., www.ibm.com, Armonk, N.Y., into its FINEX production plant. In an effort to create a safer environment at the plant for both employees and visitors, POSCO deployed a “u-management safety system” which provides managers with complete visibility throughout the entire plant through the use of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.

Employees and visitors are required to carry an RFID tag interconnected to the safety system, which enables managers to locate individuals and act quickly. This can be particularly crucial in a manufacturing environment due to the fact potentially hazardous situations, such as a gas leak, requires quick and efficient evacuation.

Prior to adopting the use of sensor technology from IBM, POSCO wasn’t able to track and monitor where employees were in realtime through the plant.

While this type of technology can be helpful in protecting the safety of workers inside a facility, what about employees working off site in remote locations, sometime even by themselves?

A number of options have been available for companies looking to remain in constant contact with their off-site employees, such as call centers or simply requiring the employee to call the office. Both options are often not effective.

Rogers Wireless, www.rogers.com, Toronto, Ont., has been working with a number of companies to help them increase their communications with employees out in the field through the use of GPS (global positioning system) technology. For those workers who don’t mind having a little extra hardware affixed to their belt, there is the Loner from Blackline GPS Inc., www.blacklinegps.com, Calgary, Alta. Aside from providing a consistent GPS location of the device, the Loner, which is about as big as a cell phone, also has a panic button and motion detection to monitor an employee’s movement or lack thereof in the event they need help.
