Enabling Mobile Commerce

Commerce, like nearly everything else these days, is going mobile. This week at Mobile World Congress, two companies, Visa, www.corporate.visa.com, and Intel Corp., www.intel.com, announced a “strategic alliance” to prod this evolution along.

The companies aim to pursue mobile-commerce solutions for smartphones and tablets in this multi-device, multi-year agreement, which will target consumers in both developed and developing markets. Ultimately, the goal of the collaboration is to provide a more consistent and secure mobile-commerce experience across all Intel Atom-based mobile devices.

This will involve harnessing Visa’s payWave application, which lets consumers make mobile payments by waving their mobile phone in front of a payment terminal at a retail location. Using NFC (near-field communication) technology, the mobile phones securely transmit payment information “over the air” to a payment terminal.
