The Internet of Things: Everything Connected

The new term prevailing in the telecommunications industry is M2M (machine-to-machine). M2M solutions are not just a mere technological matter anymore. They appear in business projections, company profitability plans, urban growth and sustainability, and ecology-related projects.

Internet-connected televisions are becoming popular; ereaders are now equipped with Wi-Fi and 3G technology; and smart meters are becoming the standard for basic service management in many countries.

We are experiencing the transformation from the Internet of people to the Internet of things, where millions of devices are connected to share data in an automated, transparent way.

Therefore, consolidating all the information generated by these machines in an intelligent way is key to make the automation of the processes easier, to allow new businesses to emerge, to support new geographic expansions of existing businesses, and to increase productivity while drastically reducing costs and improving the experience of the client.

M2M services and applications suit for both business and consumer.

When applied to businesses, we can talk about fleet management solutions, to monitor vehicles, improve driving behavior or handle ship delays. There are also utilities solutions, including smart meters, which improve knowledge of consumption and reduce electricity outages and environmental impact. Smart meters are also fitted to deliver remote maintenance that facilitates the upgrade of the devices and prevents equipment failures.

On the other hand, a good example for consumer applications resides in the category of smart home. Such solutions allow for the regulation of home temperature while gathering information from electrical appliances in order to optimize consumption, as one example.

But companies are looking for M2M products that allow them not only to improve their current business, but also to expand and evolve it, focusing mainly on large companies with wide footprint, which seek for a single vendor able to provide a single offer.

This is the reason why Telefónica is in a great position to deliver great products, its global presence and extent networks are certainly an advantage.

At Telefónica, our main objective is to match the demands of the different sectors of the industry. To achieve this, Telefónica has been partnering with many powerful companies around the world, in order to improve innovation and develop the end-to-end solutions our clients are expecting.

Leaders on different segments of the value chain of M2M like Jasper Wireless, China Unicom, Avea, Masternaut and Telit, are counted among our allies.

The objective is to provide our customers with the widest M2M product portfolio, from transportation to smart-city solutions, regardless of geography or technology, translating the M2M benefits into notable profits for companies, with solutions that are simple and easily manageable. We focus on making it work so they can focus on their business, over and above any complex technical issues.

The goal of Telefónica is to become the global M2M technological partner for our customers’ business around the world, providing them with the best M2M solutions that fit their business.
