Connected Apps for Connected Cars

Hot on the heels of Honda’s big announcement that it will offer HondaLink, a connected in-vehicle technology system, in its 2013 Honda Accord, the automaker has now made public it will work with Aeris Communications, www.aeris.com, to support its new electric-vehicle smartphone app—HondaLink EV.

Aeris Communications is an M2M (machine-to-machine)-focused cellular carrier in North America. Its AerFrame system enables a range of M2M communications, from messaging and data streaming to on-demand voice connectivity across 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

Honda, www.honda.com, says HondaLink EV will be available to owners of the new 2013 Honda Fit EV, which will become available for lease in select markets this week. The app will allow customers to check their vehicle’s charge remotely, then manage the charging process once plugged in. HondaLink EV will support 24-hour roadside assistance, plus provide perks such as the ability to remotely control cabin temperature.

Aeris Communications already leverages its AerFrame platform to provide cellular connectivity to Hyundai Motor America’s, www.hyundaiusa.com, Blue Link telematics program, which will be rolled out on all models within the next couple of years.

On why Honda selected Aeris, Charles Koch, large project leader for HondaLink at American Honda Motor Co., says, “(Aeris’) understanding of the unique requirements of the automotive market has helped us implement an optimized communications system for our customers.”

Koch will join The Peggy Smedley Show, the voice of M2M and connected devices, on Tuesday, August 28, at 12:15 p.m. CT to discuss HondaLink and its new portfolio of connected apps. Tune in live or listen to archived episodes by visiting www.peggysmedleyshow.com
